Like the MessagePad, the iPhone is nearly all screen. Its form and transition is credited to Apple's Chief Design Officer, Jonathan Ive.

Several enabling technologies made the iPhone possible. These included lithium-ion batteries that were small and powerful enough to power a mobile computer for a substantial amount of time; multi-touch screens; energy-efficient but powerful CPUs, such as those using the ARM architecture; mobile phone networks; and web browsers.[22] Apple negotiated with glass manufacturer (Corning) in 2005 to develop the  a thin, flexible, and transparent material that could eliminate the problem of metal keys causing surface damage to phone screens. (Corning) reinstated some previous research material that had not been found in previous applications to produce Gorilla Glass.
